Social Sharing and Bookmarking Plugins – A Few Thoughts

28

I’ve been thinking about social sharing and bookmarking plugins recently since I’ve been testing some on this site. After listening to a recent episode of The Podcast Answer man where Cliff (the host @gspn) mentioned testing some social sharing plugins I thought I would write something about my recent experiences.

I’ve used several social sharing and bookmarking plugins over the years and hear are a few things I’ve learned and a couple of new social sharing plugins I like.

Social Sharing Plugins and SEO

Since I come from an SEO background I’m somewhat concerned about page load times. Many Social sharing plugins will slow down your page load times. In fact, all of them except one will have an effect on page loads. Obviously Google factors in page load times in their page ranking algorithm so anyone concerned about SEO should take caution when installing a social sharing plugin that effects page load. If you’re not careful you can loose valuable rankings in Google if your page load slows. While it’s difficult to judge the exact affect a plugin plugin will have on your ranking by slowing page load, some data shows that ranking can be lost based almost entirely on page load.

Social Sharing Plugins and Bounce Rates

Keep in mind that long page loads will cause some readers to bounce off your site quickly. No one likes to wait for pages to load. I stay clear of some very popular websites because of their page load times. Instead I read them via RSS.

Sexy Bookmarks

The Sexy Bookmarks Plugin by Shareaholic is one of my favorites. It doesn’t effect load time much, if at all. In my tests it’s the second fasts loading social sharing plugin.

An additional feature of the Sexy Bookmarks social sharing plugin that I love is the eye catching graphic above the links to the social networks. It’s just an arrow pointing to the social buttons and a handwritten message. There are a several default options for messages. I prefer the message that says “Share the knowledge”. Anyway, the point is that it’s eye-catching and reminds people to share your post on their social networks.

You can place the Sexy Bookmarks plugin at the top or bottom of your posts by selecting the desire preset in the the plugin’s options. However, is is also possible to manually configure placement of the Sexy Bookmarks plugin. Just select “Manual Mode” in the “Menu Placement” options at the bottom of the plugin’s configuration page. Simply input this code into location where you would like the plugin to appear.

You can even put the code into a sidebar widget. Although I wouldn’t do this for obvious reasons. You’ll find you won’t get as many shares via the plugin if you place it in your sidebar.

rtSocial Plugin

I also wanted to let you know about a super lightweight plugin called rtsocial that just launched about 1-2 weeks ago.

rtSocial Social Sharing Bookmarking Plugin

The developer uses a non-blocking javascript to help with load time. It loads as fast as any text on your page because it doesn’t make http requests on every page load. The plugin is free, along with support. I’ve had issues with the plugin related to CSS conflicts, but it will probably work on most wordpress templates.

Slick Social Share Bookmarking Button Plugin

Slick Social Share Buttons

The social sharing plugin I was using up until the day of this post was Slick Social Share Buttons. It waits to load until your page is done, and you can configure it to float next to your content. You’ve probably seen this on a lot of other websites by now.

I prefer the floating social sharing plugins because they ensure that my readers will be reminded to share no matter where they’re at on the page, and sharing will be easy for them when they decide to pass my content around. For those who don’t like to show the number of shares they’ve received it’s possible to configure the icons so that they don’t show a counter.

Well, there’s my two cents on some of the latest social sharing and bookmarking plugins. I hope you find it useful. Let me know what you’re using so that I can go check out your site and take advantage of your social sharing plugin to share you content on my networks.

I'm trying to decide which one to go with myself. I like the fact that the Slick Social Share Buttons can 'slide' down the sidebar. I think ultimately testing is the way to go. :)

airnation.net You nailed it. It's all about testing. Slick Social was slowing down my page loads so I ditched it. It's a great plugin with regard to visibility. It's supposed to load after the page so that the user experience isn't affected. However, I noticed that I couldn't scroll immediately after hitting the page. I really want users to be able to start scrolling down as soon as they hit the page. The last thing I want is for someone to bounce off the page because of slow loading plugin. I won't visit Mashable.com for this reason. I wait for a good 5-10 seconds for Mashable to load. (I'm running chrome on OS X Lion) Mashable's load time used to be even worse, but they've spent a lot of time working on the problem over the last several months.

Adam Saverian That's interesting Adam. I go to Mashable alot but their page load does seem slow. No good. Let me ask you...have your social shares using Sexy Bookmarks been as good numbers-wise as when you were using 'Slick'?

airnation.net I don't have enough data yet. I'll report back in a few weeks. Shareaholic does provide analytics for free, so that's a plus.

airnation.net Something I like about SexyBookmarkets is that while a user moves their mouse from the title to the post content the SexyBookmarks expands (if you have to two rows or more). I like this because it catches a users eye and reminds them to share. It's not as good as slick social sharing plugin, but it might be the next best thing.

To be honest, I don't use on-page social sharing tools. I always share via my Chrome extensions (Hootsuite, Bitly, Buffer). Depending on the market users may find on-page social badges useful. Power users, however, will likely use browser plugins to share.

Adam Saverian you MIGHT is what I meant to say :)

airnation.net The data that Shareaholic reports on social sharing, not on website metrics.

airnation.net Couple of things. 1) When does your site launch and what's it all about? 2) If you have a minute I would greatly appreciate it if you would review my podcast in iTunes. It would help my get ranked higher in iTunes listings.

Thanks - Adam

Adam Saverian Adam, what plugin are you using now for bookmarking/sharing? I've been using 'slick' but I'm not liking it. Slows load time too much.

airnation.net I'm using rtSocial because it's insanely fast. It only supports Facebook and Twitter right now, but they're working on Google+. I added Google+ and Stumble Upon manually.

Adam Saverian Adam, does it put the icons on the home page snippet entries of my blog or do I have to configure that myself?

airnation.net Depends on the code of your blog. But if it doesn't they give you an short snippet of php code that you can add to your template to have it show up in the excerpts on your home page. Otherwise it will automatically show up wherever posts are called. So, it depends on the code. It's totally worth installing the it and testing it to see. If you don't like it you can toss it out. Let me know if you need some help.

Hi Adam,

Well that's interesting. I didn't know that this particular plug-in could slow down the load time that much. I use to use the Sexy Bookmarks but ventured away from that one. I just prefer having the individual social icons and I know it doesn't offer Google +.

I don't care for the one floating on the side because my blog configuration is set up wider and I cant' stand those that float over the text. I might have to check out the rtSocial that you suggested and see if that's any different then the Digg Digg that I'm currently using.

I always worry about load time and I did recently have some issues with it but soon learned it was my hosting service and not my blog. That was a relief!

Thanks for this input, I really appreciate this. Will be sure to share.

AdrienneSmithadriennesmith Your affiliate (http://www.newsuperaffiliateblog.com/) site loads fairly quickly for my use. Although that Facebook widget is slowing you down a bit. You'll notice that while your page loads it isn't instantly scrollable. It takes just a second or two before a user can scroll smoothly. I ran a test with Google's dev tools and you can see which Javascripts are slowing your page load:http://j.mp/tfdfza [screen image from the test]I wouldn't worry about it though. That site loads fast enough. Are you using shared hosting or VPS?

Adam Saverian 18 pts moderator

AdrienneSmith I talked to Shareaholic and they said that they will be adding Google+ the SexyBookmarks plugin shortly.

AdrienneSmith You know what would be awesome! If you like my podcast I would greatly appreciate it if you would leave a review in iTunes. Just something short. It would really help me get my podcast noticed in iTunes. Thanks again. adriennesmith
